Being the (currently and relatively) free person I am, I read both articles briefly. What I found striking was how much (so telling now, even though it was not so obvious then) two years of NS plus four years of university education has changed the way I think about things. How much more so it must be for Chong and Jing, who have scholarship bonds and have experienced an entirely different educational environment.
I remember thinking, back in JC, that getting a scholarship was a good thing. It was a JC thing. It was a prestigious JC goal, to get my name inked on some government contract and be called a scholar. But now... Meh. Not so much. I think I like my relative job freedom.
The other thing I found striking was that Chong didn't respond to that article. How do you feel about your scholarship bond now, refracted through your (almost ending) university education?
